Modern Graphic Cityscape Artworks

Why add a Les Matthews to your collection?

Les Matthews’ landscapes and cityscapes are trans-continental tours, with imagery inspired by towns and cities across the world. His signature style, which fuses Fine Art with contemporary geometric features, creates intrigue and introduces a refined pop of colour to every collection it graces. Les’ unique and sought-after style can be found in numerous public and private collections, including various City Museums, National Trust properties, Universities and the personal collection of H.R.H Duke of Kent.

About Les’ Work

Les’ paintings and limited edition prints feature a vibrant palette, with the colour blue often at the heart of his works. His bold style combines Fine Art with polished graphic geometric features, layered over his detailed city scenes. His work is fundamentally inspired by cityscapes and architecture from all over the globe. The growing and ever-changing nature of these environments have proved particularly influential to Les, and throughout his decade-spanning career, he has taken many iconic cityscapes as his inspiration. London’s Millennium Bridge, the canals of Venice, and New York City skyscrapers have all featured in his work, and the small towns of Brixham and Polperro have also been honoured with all the same detail and grandeur too. A number of his works feature unusual dimensions, including metre-wide panoramic landscapes, and tall narrow giclée prints that perfectly mirror the skyscrapers they depict.

Les’ work often features shades of tonal panelling where the artist creates an imagery that is unique to the painting itself, rather than simply just reflecting what the artist has seen. He locates himself within a deep figurative tradition but ultimately recognises his role as “an artist not a camera”. As such, some shapes are included as they have piqued an emotional or visual interest in the artist, whilst others are purely compositional. In every case, Les seeks not only to capture a resemblance of these iconic structures, but also an essence of the place itself.

Les presents a body of work where tradition and modernity collide, making for pieces that are complementary to a range of existing interiors and tastes. The unusual dimensions of his limited edition prints and original works suit exceptionally long and narrow spaces, including above doorways and up staircases. His more standard sized landscapes continue to offer an understated burst of colour, bringing a splash of the contemporary to collections far and wide. Les’ cityscapes are a perfect way for collectors to commemorate a special trip to these iconic locations, by capturing the charm of each location in his unique artistic style. Les’ prints pair fantastically as part of a modern gallery wall design, whilst his original pieces preserve a timelessness that is particularly complementary to more traditional home designs.
